Torque Tool Controller

The Fathom Systems iVP based intelligent torque tool controller is a field proven fully proportional intelligent valve pack using industry standard directional and pressure control valves.

It provides hydraulic control requirements for all smart Hi-Lo torque tool operations of classes 1 to 5, including FLOT (flying lead orientation tool) and maybe interfaced with all major torque tools currently available including Subsea 7, Forum (Perry), impROV, Oceaneering, Oceanworks, Saipem, Seanic, Zetechtics and Petrobras spec.

The fully integrated subsea unit, typically 3 or 5 functions, is supplied with a dedicated PC operating Fathom Systems Windows® based torque tool control software. The easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) guarantees that critical operations can be performed to the highest and safest levels. The system may be interfaced with all standard  API17D and Petrobras torque tools, with an automatic calibration using an RS232 output to the torque analyser. If the RS232 output is not available, the system can still be calibrated by manually inputting torque readings. In the absence of a tool, a simulator is available that verifies torque and turns feedback before diving. Real time torque and turns feedback and a single channel video overlay provide the operator with all the tools required for a safe and successful operation.

Operating Modes

Open Loop Pressure

Pressure and tool speed is manually controlled by the operator. The applied pressure is derived and displayed as the differential from the 2 pressure transducers in the PRV.

Open Loop Pressure

This maintains a set pressure regardless of tool speed. The pressure control valve maintains the working pressure using the differential pressure transducers in the valve pack. Manual speed control allows the operator to slow the tool on approach to the valve stops.

Smart Pressure

This tracks speed and maintains the lowest pressure that keeps the tool turning at a constant speed. If the tool slows down, pressure is increased by just enough to restore the desired tool speed. During the course of the operation pressure will gradually build to maintain rotation but the tool will stall when the set limiting pressure is reached.

Smart Torque

This mode gives closed loop control of torque. Like smart pressure control, this tracks speed and maintains the lowest pressure that keeps the tool turning at a constant. When the tool stalls, it is backed off slightly and stopped. The torque value is then increased above the stall torque and the tool moves again. This is repeated every time the tool stalls until the preset value is reached and the operation is concluded.
